HKT Big Sky Motors, which was then known as Industrial Engine Service Co., was incorporated in 1956. The business was primarily an oilfield equipment repair shop that focused on servicing trucks and oilfield pumping units.  Over the years there have been many changes in the products and services that Industrial Engine Service Co. has provided to our home town.  Industrial started out serving the oilfield business by becoming a dealer for Minneapolis Moline industrial equipment, Cummins engine parts, and Detroit Diesel and servicing these types of equipment and more.

In 1966 GMC Truck was added and the company became an auto dealership as well.  The next step was serving the local Ag community by forming a second corporation.  In 1970, HKT Tractor and Implement was incorporated to take on Ag franchises such as Minneapolis Moline Ag line, Hesston, Steiger, Case, which later became CaseIH and New Holland which later became Ford New Holland, yes we even had some new Ford tractors on the lot.  In 1984, eighteen years after we got our first auto franchise, Alken Motors was purchased from Tom Boje adding the Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler franchises.  A few years later in 1986, we also started renting cars as an Avis Licensee.  Also in 1986, Hilger Chevrolet was purchased from Bob and Martha Hilger adding the Chevrolet and Oldsmobile franchises.  In 1991 the Buick and Pontiac Franchises were added and in 1998 we also added the Jeep franchise.

HKT currently has 25 employees, 19 fulltime and six part-time that assist with the many services we offer. We take care of our customers by offering new and used car sales, service repair, auto body repair, 24/7 towing services, a parts department, Avis car rentals, a detailing shop and many more services to help our customers with whatever their automotive needs may be.

Over the past 60+ years that HKT has been in business many things have changed, but there is one thing that will never change, HKT's commitment to serving and supporting our home town. HKT has supported many community projects by sponsoring local activities such as American Legion Baseball,  Babe Ruth Baseball, Boys & Girls Club, Wet Devil's Swim Team, the Makoshika Promotions  Bump N Run, and Badlands Drifters Car Show to list a few. Big donations to numerous Glendive athletics include ABC Baseball and Toepke Park, the girls' softball complex that is named HKT Complex, DCC athletics and Buccaneer Booster Club, Dawson College Foundation, which is a scholarship program, as well as our DCHS Activities and Red Devil Booster Club. HKT has also helped bring an elementary school reading program to Glendive called Learning with Lucky, along with several other local civic and nonprofit organizations.

If you have ever wondered what the HKT in our name stands for, it is the first initial of the last name of the three founders of HKT Tractor and Implement, H-Les Hutchison, K- Lyle Kennedy, and T-Wes Toepke.   The current owners of HKT Big Sky Motors are Lindsay Toepke (son of Wes Toepke), and Scott McPherson.Â
